Project Summary
1. What was the primary goal of the Pick n Pay Stellenbosch signage installation project?
The primary goal was to revamp the interior signage of Pick n Pay's Stellenbosch store to align with their "Store of the Future" concept, while working within a significantly reduced budget compared to typical renovations.
2. What were the key challenges faced during the project?
The main challenge was delivering a high-quality signage upgrade that met Pick n Pay's new aesthetic standards while working with budget constraints. This required creative solutions, such as replacing xanita board with wallpaper and optimizing our manufacturing processes.
3. How long did the entire signage project take?
The entire project was completed efficiently, with the manufacturing phase taking about one and a half weeks and the installation phase lasting approximately one week.
4. What valuable lessons did you learn from this project?
Key lessons included designing impactful retail signage on a tight budget, the importance of thorough pre-installation planning, and gaining experience with new printing equipment. The project also reinforced the value of efficient resource management and creative problem-solving in meeting client expectations.
At Romano Signs, we recently had the opportunity to take on an exciting project for Pick n Pay, one of South Africa's leading retailers. Our task was to revamp the interior signage of their Stellenbosch store, bringing it in line with their new "Store of the Future" concept while working within a tight budget. This project presented unique challenges and learning opportunities, pushing us to innovate and deliver high-quality results efficiently.
Our client, Pick n Pay, tasked us with transforming their outdated Stellenbosch Grocery Store into a modern "Store of the Future" aesthetic, but with a significant constraint - we had to do it at a fraction of the usual budget. This meant we had to get creative with our solutions.
The project scope included:
Replacing xanita board with wallpaper
Updating departmental signage on the bulkheads
Replacing till lanterns to meet the latest specifications
Installing new aisle indicators
Updating various legal and directional signage throughout the store
Our primary goal was to meet the client's requirements within the tight budget constraints while ensuring we left the store with a result that would satisfy both Pick n Pay and their customers.
Given the budget constraints and the distance to Stellenbosch, thorough planning was crucial. We focused on two key areas:
Quality Control: We conducted several tests on our printer to ensure color accuracy and correct scaling of artwork. This step was vital to avoid any costly mistakes or reprints.
Installation Preparation: We made sure our installation team was well-briefed on the plan well in advance. With Stellenbosch being a considerable distance away, we couldn't afford any miscommunications or forgotten materials once the team had left for the site.
This meticulous planning phase set the foundation for a smooth execution of the project.
The manufacturing phase for this project was notably more efficient compared to our previous Pick n Pay Sunningdale job. We leveraged our equipment effectively to produce high-quality signage within a shorter timeframe:
Wallpaper was printed on our smaller 1.5 m HP printer
Bulkhead lettersets were routed on our CNC machine
Thanks to our streamlined processes and efficient use of resources, we completed the manufacturing phase in approximately one and a half weeks.
The installation phase proceeded smoothly, a testament to our thorough planning and preparation. Our team worked diligently for about a week, encountering no significant hurdles along the way.
The efficient execution allowed us to complete the installation on schedule, meeting all of the client's expectations. The transformation of the store was visible, with new signage enhancing the shopping experience while adhering to Pick n Pay's new aesthetic guidelines.
This project was an invaluable learning experience, offering insights into several key areas:
Budget-Conscious Design: I learned how to design impactful retail signage while working within tight budget constraints. This required creative problem-solving and efficient use of resources.
Importance of Pre-Installation Planning: The smooth installation phase highlighted the critical importance of thorough planning. Ensuring the team knows exactly what to do on the night of the install prevents costly mistakes and delays.
Technical Skills: I gained hands-on experience with the HP Printer, expanding my technical skill set - a valuable bonus from this project.
